Aaanandha Bhairavi September 25, 2007

Posted by Chithra Ramakrishnan in : Carnatic Music , add a comment
Ananda Bhairavi. is one of the most melodious ragaas in Carnatic music. Its melodic scales can also be felt in the folk music.
Ananda -which denotes ‘Happiness’/Bliss is a janya ragam with Kharaharapriya as its melakartha ragam.
Also called a Vakra ragam and Bhashaanga ragam for its aarohanam not in a proper sequence and the usage of anya swaras.(Ga2,Da1 and Ni 2)
Aanadhabhairavi is believed to have its origin form the Tamil ‘pann’ and is very widely used in folk music.
Anya swaras or alien notes as they may be called as-are those notes which do not belong to the aarohana and avarohana of its mela raaga but its usage can be found in aalapanas, kalapana swaras(prayogams)-they can be found in the aarohana and avarohana itself (like Bhairavi).Several krithis have been composed in this raaga by many famous composers.Amonst which,Syama Shasthri’s compositions can be mentioned distinctly.Kamala Sulochana(Geetham),Raave meruga(Swarajathi)marriage songs Oonjal (Pon oonjal aadinaale) Nalangu songs)lullabies are mostly set to Anandabhairavi. This is regarded as auspicious, brings in the feeling of happiness, karuna and vaatsalya and devotion.
According to Shri .Kunnakudy Vaidhyanathan, the great Violin maestro,

Muthuswamy Dikshitar underlines the importance of concentration and focus in `Manasa guru guha kripam bajare; Maya mama hrith thapam thyajare’ indicating Ananda Bhairavi’s close link to matters of the heart.

Compostions such as Maanasa Guruguha, O Jagadamba, paahi sri giriraja suthe, Marivere gathi,Himachala thanaya,Thyagarajayogavaibhavam,Neeke teliyakapote,Saamagaana priye(GNB) are the ever popular numbers in almost every concert.

Aanadabhairavi is one of the few raagas which have a Navavarnam(Kamalaamba Samrakshathu maam) and a Navarathanamalika compositions. There are many popular film songs set to this raaga..
Aananda bhairavi raagam is said to have a therapeutic and soothing effect on both the singer and the listener. It is believed to reduce hypertension and stress and stimulates positive vibrations in the nerves of the listeners.

A soul-stirring raaga ,which can be sung at any time of the day and evokes the ‘Karuna’ and ‘Sringara rasa ‘

The following  are the verses from the Bhajan Sampradaya  which  attributes to Lord Narayana Himself and the power of music..

Naaham vasaami vaikunte,na yogi hridaye ravau

Yatra madbhaktha: gaayanthi tatra thisthttami Naarada

Which means…Lord Narayana tells sage Narada

“I dwell not in Vaikuntha nor in the hearts of yogins, nor in the Sun (but) where my devotees sing (naama sankeerthanam) , there I be.”

Reviving the Chembai tradition… April 10, 2007

Enthralling Kutcheri
Carnatic vocal recital of the Veteran vocalist Dr.Prof.T.V.Gopalakrishnan was held on the 30th of March 2007 at Sri Venkateshwara temple in Birmingham. The event was to commemorate the 75th birthday celebration of the great musician.
The concert featured a variety of popular kritis in many languages.
Dr.T.V.G  started the concert with the Valachi varnam in navaragamalika, a composition by Shri .Patnam Subramania  Iyer. He exhibited the richness of his experience in portraying the  nuances of the ragas in the varnam. The next piece was Sri Ganesha Charanam ,a composition of Sri Papanasam Sivan with a remarkable reflection of the raga Thilang followed by memorable swarasprastharas. A very weighty kriti in Telugu composed by Shri Subbaraya Shastri , set to a slow tempo in the ragam Hamir Kalyani..  Venkata Shaila Vihara and Tatvameruga tarama in  Garudadhwani were  very well elaborated  and followed by brisk swaras and were inexplicable. This was followed by the much sought after piece…A thyagaraja’s composition… Nagumomu, in Aberi. The maestro elaborated the raga in his typical style and mastery, which was a sheer delight and moved the audience.
O Rama nee naamam, a Bhadrachalam Ramadass composition in Purvikalyani and Anjaneya in Kamas were conveyed to the rasikas with great depth of exposition. Krishna nee begane Baro and a request from the audience –Jesinadella in Todi were rendered after a brief alapana and were very heart-warming and enlivening.
The Kutcheri concluded with a captivating Thillana in Behag and the mellifluous Venakatachala nilayam in Sindhubhairavi were rendered with great devotion.
He was ably supported by his disciples Yogeshwaran and Saleshwaran. Shri T.V. Vasan, a veteran accompanist with the mesmerizing tempo on his mridangam provided a pleasant percussion support and enhanced the concert with his apt and attractive patterns on the mridangam.S.Varadharajan, a disciple of Dr.T.V.G. portrayed as a very skilful accompanist drawing applause from the audience. He drew a lucid sketch of Thilang and Aberi which was very impressive.

The audience were good connoisseurs of Carnatic music and the concert was well applauded.
